The IM solution only works if Dad monitors his monitor even when he's 
off-line, but it won't be effective if he is elsewhere when someone needs to 
contact him. How about installing a second phone line for his modem? The 
monthly charges are pretty low because all it needs is basic local access -- 
no long distance carrier, no call waiting, no caller ID, none of that jazz -- 
just POTS. Of course, for a few bucks more, there's always ADSL or cable.
