Sorry for butting in, but, correct me if I'm wrong here, civileme always said to run the hdparm -tT /dev/hdx command three times minimum to get a correct reading, that said I would try Stephens hdparm parameters and see if you get an improvement. You should not have to reboot to see it, it should make an immediate difference. I just wish I could remember where to put the parameters to get set up on a new boot. HTH
