I removed acpid, changed vga to normal, removed the Direct Connect rpms, and re-installed the NVidia drivers a few more times. Nothing helps. As far as booting to init 3, it just doesn't work. In fact, from failsafe itself I cannot progress to init 2 or 3--but I can to 5. When I try to boot to init 5 directly, it gets to about the saslauthd [OK] message, and then the screen flickers about three times, so it looks like it's trying to go graphical. But it doesn't work, so it stays on the message page. But what's different between booting directly to init 5, and booting to failsafe and manually doing a "init 5"?! Miark
