I just joined the list am late in this thread so I may be off beam but I think there is a problem for S3 Trio with some of the XFree versions. I believe v4.0 and 4.2 are ok, but 4.1 and 4.3 are broken. There are binary drivers available on the S3 site - google get it. HTH Bob Parker
