What does hdparm show about it? Have you tried it with both DMA enabled and
disabled? BTW, is it SCSI or IDE?
Other possibilites - bad cable? If its IDE are your HD and CD on the same
channel? (master/slave). Might want to change that if it is...
Just some random thoughts.
