I had a problem like this (different printer but the same symptoms)
with Samba, and the magic word to add to smb.conf turned out to be:
print command = /usr/bin/lpr -r -h -P %p %s
I don't know why this isn't in the default smb.conf file; I found it in the
SMB-HOWTO.
