Been through this before myself - the idea, though, it to make absolutely sure you've got the best video drivers for your box's XWindows, then to make sure that THAT is tweaked out, then, after all that is said and done, you can tweak out the games video/graphics settings; I had problems for a while at first with sound being way behind the action, then vice-versa - but just a matter of tweaking, and voila - worked like a charm...
