Check your sources, mate!

My own wife version required ./configure, manually finding dependencies and 
installing and then about 15 make commands to get installed.  Still trying to 
get the configuration worked out but usually, if it stays stable, I don't 
like to mess with it too much....

There are probably tons.  In KDE, if that is what you are using is KAlarm,  
prints text, opens a file, plays a sound, can require confirmation or 
acknowledgment, and has unlimited options for repetitions.

Korganizer of course.

Gnome-cal is a gnome version of calendar

Ktimer is a task scheduler

Look under Office, Time Management on the Mandrake menu.

Also, you could simply write a bash script to play a song, print a message, 
etc and then setup a cron job to run it for you.  

I assume that this is a non-computer task or I would suggest automating it 
with a script, if only I could do that with Real World stuff, I would be a 
rich man.

Personally, I prefer the wife application except the reminders are kind of 
jarring (frying pan to the head) but you certainly can't ignore them. ;-)
