i opened up the comp to take the NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 card out and replace it with
an NVIDIA GeFORCE2 MX200. now that i'm in linux, i can see a noticible
difference in the clarity and crispness of things on the screen, and i havn't
even tried playing DVDs yet.

but the key words in the above sentence.....'now that i'm in linux'.....

upon firing the computer back up, i went chose linux at the lilo screen. it
detected new hardware and the removal of hardware, and i went and configured
it right there. i guess that was my mistake. i let it test itself, it
eventually put me to a black screen at the command line asking for a log-in.
once i halted the system, i booted back in again, chose linux again, and
after a it booted up, it went back to the same black screen. linun-nonfb
does this too. i am only able to get into the graphical desktop by using
'failsafe' and i have to choose that i want to enter in a graphical mode and
enter the root password so the INIT runlevel will go from 3 to 5 to let me
into the system (at least that's what i notice it does while things are
scrolling up the screen). so anyway....

how do i fix this? i'd like to be able to get into the system normally when
the computer sees a reboot every week or so, for whatever reason it may be,
gotta love it, full week w/out reboot and even then it's not because of
problems...i'll never be a regular ms-windows user again. ok, that's getting
off topic....

so yeah, how do i fix this? help greatly appreciated. thanks.

Mike
