Just a though (for both our situations), it would be a *lot* easier just
to create a dir on / that was read/write for your user.

msec would probably go and change the perms on it next time it ran, but
there's a way to prevent it from doing that, can't for the life of me
remember how...I gotta start writing this stuff down...
