I have to add:
I enabled supermount again and now those DVD's run fine:o)
Apparently they (and then only some, so there goes my previous reckoning down 
the drain) are only bothered the first time at decryption.
Once they've been added in .dvdcss/ there's no hitch anymore.

so maybe at last I'll be able to leave supermount on....it's been a long road.
