May be I don't understand you. k3b is a cd writing program. It is not meant 
for ripping dvds. For dvd ripping, you can use videodvdrip which depends on 
mplayer and transcode. As such mencoder that comes with mplayer also does it. 
If I understand that you want to make dvd of your home movies, I am helpless. 
But you can make vcds with those above programs and vcdimager.
