Set it up with the right info (try 180 or 300 seconds) and every few minutes it will check your POP server. You can set it to use a sound signal (don't let the visual launch, it's an interruption :o( ). When mail arrives, click on the little tray on the panel, and it will launch k-mail and retrieve your mail for you.
