Fairly safe if you do it right. If you make it owned by root and setuid root in a directory only root can write to, most of the problems go away. If it's owned by a normal user but run by root then it can be hacked by anything with the user's rights. If it's in a directory owned by a user it's trivial to copy it, hack it and overwrite the original. Kernel 2.6 will allow it to have just LAN access rights, but for that you'll have to wait until MDK 10. -- Richard Urwin
