Did you have the same hostname set in both VMWare and Linux? As far as Samba 
is concerned VMWare is a different computer and so must have a different 
hostname.
Samba will use the Linux hostname as the Samba hostname by default, but you 
can set it manually using the 'hostname=' parameter in /etc/samba/smb.conf

Don't forget to restart Samba after any change
