HiIt's always tricky deciding when to bring out a new release, and when to freeze packages and go into RC testing. Obviously you want to include the latest stable releases of everything, but co-ordinating hundreds of different packages is just not practical. However, in this case, I was really surprised to see a Mandrake release just before long-awaited releases from both Mozilla and OpenOffice (Mandrake ships with OO 1.1RC4 and Moz 1.4). These are very popular programs, and _big_ downloads. In fact I'd been telling a friend who is thinking of installing Linux to wait until Mandrake 9.2 came out so that he could get the latest versions of Moz and OO - I just assumed they'd be included in 9.2. No big deal for me, since being the cheapskate I am, I'll be downloading the download version, so a bit more downloading won't kill me, but if I'd pre-ordered the CDs, I'd be pretty miffed, especially if I had a pay-per-minute dialup connection.
Have to say lads I am not all that impressed with the new 9.2.
Does not seem all that much of a step forward from 9.1 and I am particularly disappointed by the selection of RPMs that come with it.
Many of them are well out of date.
[ducks flames]I won't flame you for that, but if you don't turn of that Reply-to in your mail client, you may be looking for a fire hydrant ;-)
