There are already two kernels.
kernel-2.4.22-10mdk   is the version currently on the mirrors. It supports 
packet writing but *will* fry susceptible LG-CDroms

kernel-2.4.22-21mdk is on the update mirrors, and has packet writing disabled.

So long as you do not have an LG CDrom you could use either kernel.

As for packet writing. Search the Expert list archives for instructions on how 
to use it.
