Have you opened up your firewall between your samba server and the local net?
In /etc/shorewall/rules you need lines like :
ACCEPT fw masq tcp 137,138,139
ACCEPT fw masq udp 137,138,139
ACCEPT masq fw tcp 137,138,139
ACCEPT masq fw udp 137,138,139
(Depending on your mandrake release your local network may be called 'masq' or
'loc' )
Then 'shorewall restart'
Other thing to check is in /etc/samba/smb.conf set
wins support = yes
