     I've seen Derek's reponse an you might try his suggestions. 
But first see if 'aumix' is installed. 
  rpm -qa | grep -i aumix

    I fixed a fresh 9.2 install simply by installing aumix (it 
wasn't installed by default) and then running it as root to set 
all sliders to 100%.  Don't forget to save before you exit aumix.
You should'a mentioned what WM you're using. If it's KDE, you can 
use kmix after doin the aumix deal above, to adjust sound levels 
as user.
