Off the top of my pointy head I'd say you need the decoders and codecs that can't be included in GPL operating systems to do what you're attempting.
Go to:
http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/
and add a PLF software source repository, then upgrade the mplayer, xine, and
other multimedia packages. You may get lucky.
Then come back to post any specific questions.
