[newbie] start up problem

Hello everyone.  I have one question.
    Soon after I instal Linux-mandrake I try to start it up. I thought it 
would work.  but no it decided to get an error right after it tried to start 
the loopback device.  What happened?
    If you guys could answer this it would help me a whole bunch
