I am 80% sure the Dell soundblaster cards should work. Now that you have tried all of these different settings and messed with other drivers the default settings have been changed. So now when you try to update the kernel it might not work because you changed the default and changed alot of serious settings. You might have to reinstall and then update the kernel. I would still try updating the kernel with the installation you have now, and then see if it works.
