There's something badly wrong with your system, David.  Are you 
getting segfaults from all sorts of apps?

I think, first, that it's worth asking if anyone else is using a 
combined cdrw and dvd?

Assuming that we can rule out hardware, then I would settle for one 
app and try to get that sorted.  For instance, remove xine (urpme 
xine, or from mcc > software removal) and reinstall it, using a clean 
set of plf files.  Be careful not to mix release numbers or sources 
unless urpmi specifically asks for it.

Certainly I can view dvds from xine, on a stock 9.1, with my drive not 
scsi-emulated, and plf files.
