i686 is IA32 (Intel Architecture); which means any current Athlon, PIII, P4, 
Celeron, Duron. The Mandrake rpms are basically as optimized for i586 or i686 
as needed I think; and I doubt you'd get much of a performance increase by 
rebuilding. There have been "cooker" people that did so, but I don't know if 
it was ever decided if the return was sufficient to justify the time to 
rebuild everything required.

For those using VIA and Transmeta chips all bets are off anyway. (-:

You and I both seem to need to build ourselves new systems, probably more a 
necessity for me since I'm still running an old PIII 500 from 1998. My next 
will be based on AMD64; probably a dual processor unit of some description. 

With too much RAM. <g>
