I get a huge pile of dependencies - OK I know about them. They all install
correctly, but then I am left with this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# urpmi --wget xfce4
Some package requested cannot be installed:
xfce4-4.0.3-1.2mdk.i586 (due to missing xfwm-4.0.3.1-0.1mdk.i586)
xfwm-4.0.3.1-0.1mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied libXinerama.so.1) (Y/n)

So you've built it for Xinerama support, but I don't have the .so.
The xfce FAQ tells me how to create the .so
I've done that, and run ldconfig, but I still get the same result.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] lib]# ldconfig /usr/X11R6/lib
[EMAIL PROTECTED] lib]# urpmi --wget xfce4
Some package requested cannot be installed:
xfce4-4.0.3-1.2mdk.i586 (due to missing xfwm-4.0.3.1-0.1mdk.i586)
xfwm-4.0.3.1-0.1mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied libXinerama.so.1) (Y/n) n
[EMAIL PROTECTED] lib]# file /usr/X11R6/lib/libXinerama.so.1
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXinerama.so.1: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386,
version 1 (SYSV), not stripped

What's wrong? Is it safe to --force the issue?

I'm on vanilla 9.2, with kernel 2.4.22-26mdk.
