Just to follow-up, the main problem appears to be coordinating a stable 
connection between the windows and Linux boxen while also maintaining the 
dial-up Internet connection. He, in fact does plan to share the Internet 
connection by using the Linux box as the gateway.

I suggested the router because he has been working at this for a bit, seems to 
be bouncing back and forth between Internet working and then LAN not working 
and LAN working and Internet not working and said that he was pressed for 
time.  Easiest route being to let a router do the work and DHCP assign IP 
addresses to both boxes.

I don't quite understand all the problems with the wizard stuff, but then I 
have never used it, I always set my connections up manually and don't have 
the added overhead of a modem connection.
