Modules.conf was replaced in 2.6 with modprobe.conf,and modules was replaced with modprobe.preload, so you might want to start there. SOme people have reported dealing with this successfully by making an entry in the modules.preload file for the nic module and then putting a alias "nicmodule" ethx" in modprobe.conf -- /g
