Go to your console and type "sndconfig".  Then just follow the menu and enter your 
vital info.

Let us know if your card is not one of the selections.  As far as that sound mixer 
error message, it really doesn't have anything to
do with permission settings.  It's just another way of telling you that your card 
hasn't been recognized.
