Probably a flat panel or TFT, yes.
Did you check the XF86Config file what server it's running? "vesa" I betcha 
and 24 bits as default depth. Edit that file and tune down the depth to 16 
bits that way you'll prolly be able to get a screen that's workable using 
800x600 res...at least you can see what you're doing albeit not too pretty, 
then:-P

Then start experimenting around what's best for you i.e. how far you can go.

On my old Thinkpad XFree3.3.6 worked at 800x600 24bits (svga driver) whereas 
XFree4.x.x doesn't go further then the same res at 16bits using vesa 
driver....just to make you happy that last remark:-D
