Probably a flat panel or TFT, yes. Did you check the XF86Config file what server it's running? "vesa" I betcha and 24 bits as default depth. Edit that file and tune down the depth to 16 bits that way you'll prolly be able to get a screen that's workable using 800x600 res...at least you can see what you're doing albeit not too pretty, then:-P Then start experimenting around what's best for you i.e. how far you can go.
