Argh. Found more info at the Dell Linux community website. Seems there's an 
RPM for the 845 patch. <sigh>

and they recommend putting it (the compiled version) in /sbin instead of 
/usr/bin. Then issuing the following:

Configure your system to start the patch automatically at bootup. Switch to 
the root user (type su) and then:

* For a Redhat-like system.

echo "/sbin/845patch 10000" >> /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit

I'm off to go try that now.
