That *IS* an interesting thread -- it sounds like the problem may be in the 
XF86 4.x driver... One poster in that thread suggested that XF86 4.1 solved a 
similar problem, in comparison to XF86 4.0, for them... isn't Mandrake 9.2 
using XF86 4.3.0?    I have heard of people backtracking to XF86 3.3.6, which 
supported more older video cards, but I'm not sure if that's such a good 
idea.

I think this Permedia 2 has a rom date of 3 to 5 years ago.
