If you wish to save your /home directory, you HAVE to have it in a
separate partition when formatting "/" otherwise, it's toast. At
least that's what I've always understood. What I'm saying is / and
/home need to be two separate partitions, NOT that one needs to be a
primary partition and the other an extended partition, although you
WILL need to have a bootable primary partition, I think.
