How are you managing to add software as a user? You have to be root to install an RPM You do need permission for a user to access any hardware device, but that is all sorted out automatically. You should see that /dev/sound or /dev/dsp is owned by whatever user you are logged in as. And what do you mean by "choke" If you start xmms from the command line do you see any error message?
