Just use "fortune" - works like a charm. You can echo the output and do
not only a signature with it but MOTD as well. There are heaps of
"fortune" databases available - from serious to not-so-serious (even
some that are outright mean and nasty).

All mine are from the 182 different fortune databases that I've sucked
from the net...
