Hello all,

I just installed Linux-Mandrake 6.1 Power Pack and managed to get my X
server configured. I am able to run startx and get into KDE. The
appearance of KDE is, to say the least, weird. It's pretty much
unusable. Here's whats wrong:

Click on any pop-up menu like the K menu and the menu is displayed as
word only, very difficult to read against the desktop background. In
other words, there's no solid window background against which one can
read the words. The same is true if I open the KDE Manager. I see the
frame of its window, the words in it vaguely, but the background of
the desktop shows through. I can't tell how to change a thing,
because I can't read anything. If I try to move windows around,
strange afterimages are left all over the place.

Another annoying effect is that submenus display right on top of the
main menu. For instance, I click the K menu, and marginally readable
selections pop up. I roll over a selection that has sub-selections,
and those are displayed right on top of the original menu without
repainting. The result is a jumble of characters that quickly becomes
unreadable. Layer upon layer of windows and menus can pile up creating
total gibberish. I tried opening the GIMP and the same situation
occured: no substance to its window, dewsktop shows through, and the
destop menu shows through, making the GIMP controls unusable.

Having looked at some screenshots on the Web, and determined that
everyone isn't getting these same terrible results, I still don't know
where to start solving this problem. Looking for a solution via KDE is
tough, since its unusable. If anyone has any ideas or has seen this
before, any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

my posts and it usually takes me 3 or 4 tries to get it posted...
