Well, not using KDE but still using KPPP, I don't necessarily have that
problem, but you CAN, however, open a term and type:

killall -KILL pppd

That will effectively kill the connection.

Double check all the settings in KPPP - I prefer to have the "connected"
dialogue up so that I can see what's going on...
