But alsamixer does not indicate any problem or muted audio. No manner
of fiddling with the levels will get me any sound...

Or : from a CLI : aumix.
Or : from a CLI : sndconfig
Assuming, of course, that you have those rpm's installed.
I guess it's best to run as root.
