I coulda sworn I was just reading a few weeks ago that Red Hat said they were not giving any support to Linux on the desktop...
But now this?

Yeah, it was.. but I think from memory that that was more about home users...
Redhat, novel, IBM and co are all going after the enterprise desktop... mostly places where the user in question only needs email, web, basic office stuff etc... and a sysadmin loads it all on for them..
In that market, Linux is already competitive because MS's preloading and stuff doesn't really come into it.,
