Sounds like you do not have lame installed.  You need to get it from a plf 
repository since it is illegal to make mp3's without paying Frauenhaufer a 
royalty in the countries that recognize the compression patent.  For 
instance, it is illegal in the United States to download and use lame.

Ogg is a free (GPL'd) audio compression format that does not require royalty 
payments to anyone.  Many people think it sounds better than mp3, 
particularly at the lower bitrates and it has the added bonus of creating 
smaller file sizes.  One drawback is that it is not supported by many 
hardware players right now, but more support is coming.  iriver supports it 
with a firmware upgrade for it's players and there are a few others.  Also, 
most of the non-MS software players support it now, like winamp, and of 
course all the linux based software players support it.
