I have no experience with Macs or PPCs, so I could be way off base, but did
you check the BIOS settings? I'm looking at some notes I scribbled during
10.0 CE install, and it was hanging on boot until I disabled the BIOS power
management.

Macintosh computers do not have a BIOS chip. The only thing newer macintoshes have is an so-called "Open Firmware", witch can be accessed by pressing a key sequence. Nothing can be configured there. The power saving stuff is all done by the system (and so doesn't activate at all when an OS doesn't use it).
