Yes. I have given up on pam and shadow authentication and am trying sasldb.

I have used saslpasswd2 to create a sasldb and changed the owner to postfix
which I have placed
in /usr/lib/sasl2/sasldb /var/spool/postfix/usr/lib/sasl2/sasldb
and /var/spool/postfix/etc/sasldb (on the theory that one of them has to be
the correct location.)

I have created /usr/lib/sasl2/smtpd.conf containing
pwcheck_method: auxprop

and copied it to /var/spool/postfix/usr/lib/sasl2/
and /var/spool/postfix/etc/

When I send a mail my /var/log/mail/warnings shows
May 5 00:19:22 jennings postfix/smtpd[18036]: warning: SASL authentication
problem: unknown password verifier
May 5 00:19:22 jennings postfix/smtpd[18036]: warning: SASL authentication
failure: Password verification failed
May 5 00:19:22 jennings postfix/smtpd[18036]: warning:
Derek.localdomain[192.168.1.45]: SASL PLAIN authentication failed

I have also tried with
pwcheck_method: sasldb
with the same result.
