On my SuSE 8.2 system I can type accented characters on this UK keyboard by
using AltGr as a 'dead key' - ie, AltGr-; then e gives .

I just tried that on a Mandrake 10.0 Community installation and ... nothing.
No accents. I've Googled on this and have found loads of highly confusing and
contradictory explanations of how to get accented characters. Many of these
explanations refer to config files that aren't on my system.

There seems to be a file called /etc/X11/Xmodmap which looks promising but I
can't work out what to add to get a dead key (I'd prefer to use AltGr as on
my SuSE system).

Any pointers?
