First preview in archiver if possible and read "README" file or the "Install" file.
Then you tarball it.
Here are a few steps.
1. open a terminal and log on as root.
2. cd /usr/share (unless you are directed other wise in README file)
3. extract tarball to /usr/share with this command:
tar -vxzf /home/location_of_file/Winmodem.tgz
a directory will be automatically created in /usr/share with the name of the file you just tarballed. A side note to the above command. it works with a .tgz file. If your file happens to be a .bz2 file then your command and arguement would be tar -vxjf.
4. cd /usr/share/the_name_of _new_directory.
5. this is an easy one: ./configure
file is now being configured.
6. When this is complete if there are no errors your next command is: make
7. When this is complete your next command is: make install
congratulations, you have just installed your first program from source.
