Checking the checksum on both the downloaded image, and the burned CD checks that the image you downloaded and burned match the origional image. There have been times when an image on the mirror was corrupted, as well as it getting corrupted durning the download. And sometimes the CD image you burned does not match the file on the disk. Usualy a corrupted RPM will error out and not install, but it is better to be safe.
