Because it offers a number of extra features that some people find
useful.
I've had problems with the Midgard error too when doing basic PHP. I
hope the new installer will give people the option of which to install,
ie plain PHP or Midgard (and also an option on which database system)
and then configure both properly. *That* would be nice!
