when you say black screen, is it totally black, or is there some text?

Try hitting Ctrl-Alt-F1 - you should get a login prompt. Then look at the logs to see why your X server is having problems. If the X server thinks it is starting ok, you may have the monitor set wrong, and it is blanking out instead of trying to display beyond its frequency range.

(You used to be able to burn out older monitors this way!)
