 Ok, been a long time since I had to mess with the tty's, now that I
 think about it it was the com ports I was meaning to address, com1
 etc. are ttys0 etc. But that was so long ago in linux years that it
 to could have changed?

Yes, COM1 translated to /dev/ttyS0, COM2 to /dev/ttyS1, etc. They are still there, but with the device file system they are links to /dev/tts/0, /dev/tts/1, etc. (Or other tts entries, depending on your hardware...)
