If it is the apic/acpi issue, then WinXP wouldn't have a problem with it, as 
the chipset drivers for your motherboard would prevent anything like this.  
It is the driver modules in Linux, which have to be developed by reverse 
engineering the chipset, that can get a little shaky.

If it really just popped up, it more likely would be a imminent failure of 
your drive or a bad cable.  

What is the chipset on your motherboard.  if you don't know, post the output 
of 'lspci -v'
