edit the /etc/inittab file; make a backup; change the line that says:

id:5:initdefault:

to:

id:3:initdefault:

Reboot. You will be in text mode. (The mode I prefer because you cannot
troubleshoot X-Windows problems quite as easily - and can't change
window managers quite as easily.)
