No wonder.  You are only using 8 bit graphics.
Go back into the Mandrake Monitor set up GUI and select 16 or 24 bit graphics.

If you want to do it the hard way, then edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and change 
the line
DefaultColorDepth 8
to something more sensible.
